What is Advocacy?

By: Mikayla Onken, Outreach Services Advocate

"Hi, My name is Mikayla and I am the services advocate here at Family Advocates. I work in Iowa, Grant, and Layfette counties. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In order to bring awareness during this month, I wanted to explain what advocacy is.

Advocacy is one of the main foundations of our agency. For domestic violence, advocacy can take the forms of helping the victim fill out a restraining order, going with the victim to court, and providing peer-to-peer counseling for the victim. This advocacy is integral for victim survivorship and helps save live daily. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please feel free to call our 24-hour toll-free hotline at 800-924-2624. This line provides you with free and confidential advocacy 24 hours a day. Thank you!"
